Five years after Didier Comès’s death, the exhibition L’encrage ardennais (the Ardennes being the region Comès came from and with which his work is most closely associated) is a new collaboration between the author’s family, the King Baudouin Foundation, the Musée en Piconrue in Bastogne and the Abbey of Stavelot.

The exhibition tells the story of an unsettling storyteller, a poet of the world of animals and plants whose drawings, dominated by black and white, covered a wide spectrum, ranging from the most meticulous realism to complete fantasy. Comès established himself as one of Belgium’s most important graphic novelists of the post-war period - ignoring commercial diktats and trends, he sought to create a world of his own where paganism, witchcraft, rural living, life on the fringes and exclusion, religion and philosophy, war and death can all be found.

This exhibition pays tribute to the author’s extensive knowledge and the myriad references which guided him throughout the process of creating his graphic novels, opening up an ethnographic dialogue between his drawings and real-life objects, the majority of which bear some relation to other art forms. The exhibition shows the way in which Comès was shaped by both his natural and his cultural environment, as well as by the less tangible European and ardennais heritage passed down to him by his forebears.
