Sports Events in Liège province

Liège province is a region that is well known by sports enthusiasts. Indeed, it hosts numerous sports events of international renown. From cycle races in the spring, such as the Flèche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Liège, to the Formula 1 Grand Prix via the Rallye du Condroz or International Showjumping.

Liège province and cycling... a long love story

This romance between the two-wheeler and the Liège region began a very long time ago... This unconditional love between the two is particularly evident in the case of Liège-Bastogne-Liège.

Established in 1892, this 260-km cycle race is one of the season’s most demanding and most prestigious classics, but it is above all the oldest... which is why it's incidentally nicknamed “la Doyenne”. The greatest races have added their names to the winners’ list, such as Eddy Merckx, Moreno Argentin, Alejandro Valverde or Bernard Hinault.

While the Flèche Wallonne is a more recent race, it is no less a test of endurance that all racers want to win at least once in their career. The finish at the Mur de Huy is always the decisive test for the best riders climbing up its impressively punishing gradients.

In addition to these two legendary races organised on its territory every year, Liège province regularly hosts cycling Grands Tours and in particular the Tour de France. Indeed, cycling’s second biggest sports event, the Grande Boucle, is set to pass through Liège again in 2017. While the Grands Départs of 2004 and 2012 were particularly memorable, the 16 stage departures, 15 finishes, and the 3 time trials also need to be added to these... talk about a love story...

Passion for motor sports thrums through Liège province

The inescapable engine of automobile sport in Liège province and in Belgium is inevitably the Spa-Francorchamps Circuit. This circuit, said by teams and drivers to be the most attractive in the world, hosts numerous prestigious international tests of endurance. Most notable among these are the Formula 1 Grand Prix, the 24h de Spa, the 6 H WEC or the 25h VW Fun Cup.

However, motor sport in Liège province doesn’t stop at the Spa-Francorchamps Circuit: several other tests are also acclaimed by enthusiasts of the genre. This is notably the case of the Rallye du Condroz, the real high point on the Belgian rally calendar. Every year, the Huy test of endurance attracts the best Belgian drivers, but also international stars such as Marku Allen, Sébastien Loeb, Sébastien Ogier, Peter Solberg or Kris Meeke and Craig Breen. The Spa Rally and the East Belgium Rally are lesser known but are still unmissable tests of endurance in Belgium.
